good story: last week i went to Target. twice. i went on Saturday, came home, and made over my bathroom as well as a small part of my kitchen (think: wall art, vibrant & provincial-looking green scrollwork, French, and carrots. enticing, eh?). that night i had Giordano's pizza. it was excellent.
on Monday i went to Target again. on the phone that night with Boy Wonder, i admitted it. "you went to Target again?" he asked. he couldn't keep the incredulous tone out of his voice, and of course i caught it and then i felt like a freak. these freakish feelings soon faded when i remembered how amazing my night had been, post-Target, because of Target.
at Target i bought some holiday things --- namely, Christmas lights. Christmas lights have always been a staple of my decor wherever i've lived --- i do believe my career under the buzz of fluorescent bulbs has instilled in me an obsession with low, more flattering light. therefore, the subtle, soothing glow of one string of Christmas lights per room has always done the trick for me, not to mention the fact that it serves as a nice nightlight for me to come home to at the end of an evening out (and i tell myself it wastes less electricity than leaving a lamp on).
since one of my strings had recently burned out completely (yes, i tried replacing the fuse and some of the burned-out bulbs. nothing worked), i took this opportunity to not only replace that string, but invest in a few more. i came home Monday night with 2 strings of 100 and 1 string of 50 white lights (on a white cord, of course!). i also splurged for a string of 25 larger colored lights, whose rosy glow you can just see on the right side of the photo below.
filled with a sense of purpose, i dashed into my apartment, deposited all of my Target loot on the couch, and rummaged through everything until i found the boxes of lights. for the next hour i stood on tiptoe, bent over backward, taped, ruminated upon, and then finally stood back with my hands on my hips to survey my handiwork. 3 rooms of my apartment were transformed and bathed in the softest, and simultaneously most festive, beams of happy light.
good story?
good story.
last week,
i was master of
making it bright.
this week,
i'd like to continue the trend.
what are you doing
to make (& keep) things bright
in your life?

i have to confess my last trip to target was the most stress filled trip i've ever taken there. but i think that had to do with grocery shopping/holiday shopping with every one else and their whiny kids. sometimes i want to hit people, but i try to refrain.
WELL YOU KNOW.
I did this very same thing with lights today except my collection consists of the large frosty globes strung on the old farm door and a string of 100 whities on the kitchen cupboards. It's lovely and warm. You're right.
The other things I do with lights are placing them as small bright prayers on the corner of everything you touch. I'm thankful that you do such a wonderful job placing them on everything I touch as well.
Love you toujours.
XO
lindsay: who are we kidding? you do not have a violent bone in your body. so if you were even slightly tempted to strike someone's whiny child, suffice it to say it must have been the most awful thing to ever befall you. i suggest you wait awhile and then make sure you have a positive experience at Target so the Mecca of Goodness (Target) is not ruined for you for life.
plumie: i LOVE to think you are doing the same things as me in your house. putting up lights, leaving them on unattended (that's a no no but in the world of a single gal it's a yes yes b/c we can do whatever we want), basking in their glow. re: the lightprayers: i know! remember the night we laid in our beds and imagined angels posted at every corner, illuminating every shadow of our girl-sleeping-alone fear? i do. that was a special night.
That WAS a special night.
i love white christmas lights.
i love your waterfall of stars - cascading into your house from the entry and collected in a beautiful bowl...
new apartment this year...so new lighting scheme...maybe i will put them up on saturday...
great idea about the mason jars, lady! i might just steal that!
s. nun: i know! who doesn't? hey, i'd love to see your living space sometime (perhaps on a homey blog post of your own)! or maybe you already have some pictures posted. i should go check...
mme: hey, i never thought about it that way. but of course i love it. light spilling in from the outside in a waterfall. beautiful. YAY i can't wait for an "en images" post detailing the holiday decor of the duchess and the saint...
i got the redecorating itch last night. it feels so good. (and luckily, ryan pretty much agrees with every creative impulse i have, even if he doesn't know it 'til i'm done.) i need some strings of white lights, though, *and* some strings of square chinese lanterns. (and i love love *love* your mason jar innovation, by the way.)
my heart
misses
your heart
trista: i hope light reaches the far corners of your heart and your going-to-be home. i think the love you have is a good start, by way of illumination :)
plume: ditto.
