this blogette's namesake

today i took another step
toward who i'm meant to be
[she]

today i bought Imogen Heap's new much-awaited album, Ellipse. i bought the deluxe version with instrumental tracks for all the songs, plus a few pages of what i'm sure will be beautiful and original album art. i was very tempted to choose the "next-day shipping" option until i realized it would add $16 to my total. seeing as that was more than the price of the album itself, i couldn't do it. but i wanted to. very badly.

in case you've wondered, this very blog is named for Imogen's solo project, Speak for Yourself. i was so taken with the album --- it's original, brave, and speaks authentically to many of the thoughts that run in my head every day. i remember reading an interview where Immi said many of the songs on that album stemmed from taking one "naughty" thought and seeing where it went.

one of these days, you'll miss your train
and come stay with me
we'll have drinks and talk about things
any excuse to stay awake with you
[ from "goodnight & go"]

needless to say, i can't WAIT to see what she'll have to think, dream, and say on Ellipse. my fingers itch to tear open the package, my ears strain for the intricate electronics, unbelievable vocals, and diary-like writing. in the meantime i found a blog that contains a player that streams the album. apparently the player can't be embedded by Blogger (i tried). but if you want a taste, go here. i'm certain you won't be disappointed.

mm, what you say? that you only meant well?
(well, of course you did.)
mm, what you say? that it's all for the best?
(because it is.)
mm, what you say? that it's just what we need?
(you decided this.)
mm, what you say? what did you say?

[from "hide & seek"]

the percussion sounds on one of Speak for Yourself's songs were produced by taking empty CD jewel cases and pounding them on a rolled-up scrap of carpet Immi found on the side of the road. any woman who can produce an entire album from the ground up using this kind of creativity and out-of-the-box resourcefulness gets my support. period.

for all of you out there who are finding your voice, discovering your strength, and doing things you never thought you could . . . i join with you in the uphill climb. we are going to make it.

one song at a time,
she.

Because I know that were we together I'd let you tear off the wrapping on that album and we'd lay in the dark with some Esme and listen. I miss you. I forget what your voice feels like. I cannot remember the warm glow of the lamps in your flat. And most of all I feel like a doughnut -- there's a hole in my center.

Love you Besters.
