collage de jeudi

between clicks and whirrs of the IV pumps and the wintry appearances of 5 patients this morning, i've been devouring small chunks of the world wide web --- particularly morsels from the fashion and style section of the cyberplate piled high with inspiration.

leaping gleefully down the chutes and ladders of the blogworld (i believe the immediately preceding burst of flight to my final landing was coco & kelly), i alighted for a spell at Vogue and was instantly drawn to the interview Sally Singer did with Anne Hathaway. i've never particularly liked Anne (or "Annie" as everyone seems to call her), but i'm not sure why. maybe the dowdy bangs and university cable-knits she was wearing when we were introduced during Devil Wears Prada have something to do with it . . . the bottom line is, i don't dislike her, i've just never had a compelling reason to find her any more interesting than the next Hollywood actress.

however, the interview revealed a woman who's trying to define (and even become acquainted with) herself --- and that's something with which i can echo and identify. one of my favorite parts of the interview was when Anne spoke of her recent split with now-imprisoned Raffaello Follieri: "i don't talk about this, except when i'm asked . . . it's a complicated situation that has the ability to define me in ways i am not comfortable with."

now i'm going to take the lip of this plate between my thumb and forefinger and rotate it slightly to the left: the craftionista section strewn with visual & tactile delights galore. it was my gasp-worthy surprise this morning to find Umberdove in my subscriptions . . . via Creature Comforts! CC is a mecca of creativity, sweetness, and rabbit trails to all sorts of amazing handmade items. Ez features the best finds out there, and it burst the buttons right off the front of my shirt to discover she'd commissioned a pillow from Umberdove for a friend. having only recently stumbled upon the gorgeous fabric & thread collage that Umber does myself, i'm now privileged to call her friend. her handiwork is beautiful in Ez's list of handmade treasures she gave during the holiday season (Umber's pillow is #12 in the list).

i wish there were more time, mouse clicks, and pages to share, but seeing as i've been interrupted a total of 317 times and your attention span probably isn't long enough anyway, i'm putting the finishing touches on this collage and calling it a morning. care to share what you've been stumbling upon today?

leave it to the raven maven to find such treasures!

how EXCITING for UMBER. that is like BIG TIME.

i feel precisely as you did about Anne, but have recently finding morsels of respect for her acting and presence. she really stepped up her fashion this year and metamorphed from stupid waife (think olsen twins, hilton, richee, etc) into an intelligent and reserved fashionista (think maggie gyllenhaal, zoe deschanel)

weird.
all blondes versus all brunettes.

i should never have died my hair back to blonde...

well done, your internet acumen is resourceful.

i hate spelling.
please ignore the errors.
because i hate deleting and reposting even more.

step it up blogger and get the spell check working in your comment box.

(oh wait, that is probably a IE problem. i hate IE but have to use it at work; i bet mozilla offers it)

mme: as always, you flatter, inspire, and amuse me. i have a particular distaste for all blonde people everywhere, but unfortunately boy wonder is a dirty blond and you are my girl with the flaxen hair, and when you put debussy into the equation, i simply cannot unequivocally hate blondes. darn. i do like to have distaste for things. oh well. secondly, i ignore ALL errors for the fact that your comment sent me to dictionary.com to squirrel out the meaning of "acumen." well done, and consider all grammatical/spelling errors overlooked.

your examples of "stupid waifs" made me grin wickedly; likewise, your examples of "intelligent and reserved fashionistas" made me nod and hmmm in agreement.

ah yes, 'acumen.'

that was one of the GRE words that i crammed for (when i took the GRE three times...sigh). i made flash cards of 300 words, weeeded 100 out that i already knew, and then propmtly memorized all of the a-g's. that's as far as i got...must pick up that stack again.

see my post from yesterday, was similarly inspired through a pathway of blog clicking... btw, just sat and read the interview - how unassuming she seems. how refreshing.

For many a reason, but this is just a cherry on top. I have not cared one way or the other about Miss Hathaway (except for when some guy at my old bar decided I looked like her and called me "Princess Diary" for a whole month - I hated her for that time), but I do have to admit that I kinda liked Devil Wears Prada. In that "this is such a stupid movie, no one would ever just be given a pair of Chanel Boots but-oh-my-god I totally wish that someone would give them to me" way. You know.

By the way, your acumen is hot.

i stumbled across anne hathaway at my favorite vintage shop in topanga canyon (just outside LA). she was buying a kimono. i can respect that.

lindsay: yep, clickie clickie. glad you found the interview a good read like i did!

umber: oh, i know. the clothes closet at Runway had me drooling all over m'self. Devil Wears Prada is one of the few movies i own. i liked it that much...not sure what that says about me, but i like to think it says i'm fairly conservative in practice and awfully extravagant in my dreamlife :)

gp: really?!?! wow. star sightings...you really did move out west! how glamorous. i'll bet you took it all in quietly and just smiled a secret smile to yourself...

Ditto to the Anne (he shoulders look beautiful in that snap).
AND did you nearly scream when you saw the Umber in such a featurette???

1. Devil Wears Prada: I own it as well. RW loves it. I have a thing for Ms. Streep.

7. "distaste for blond people everywhere..."? WHAAAATTTTTTT???
:)

the blondes in my life are the vast golden sands of in a desert wind stirring wisdom, rest and growth, yet still sexy as hell.

oh dear. i didn't mean any offense by my blonde comment...on the contrary, i used to sort of dislike blonde people but have since encountered so many lovely ones i've had to retract those uneducated sentiments. bah. becoming a better person is always slightly irritating.

(just kidding - most of the time.)
